This is a tricky time of year. On the one hand there are those warm days of Indian summer (if we’re lucky), but on the other, there are mornings which have a nip in the air and a promise of autumn. (And there’s also the rain. The less said about that, the better.) Sartorially, we’re itching to try the new season looks, but we don’t want to hasten the end of summer, either. What’s a woman to do?
Step forward Lauren T Franks. As Style Editor of Red magazine, she's as effortlessly chic as you'd expect her to be.
So, when we had the chance, we talked trends, wardrobe essentials and her fashion insider secrets. And then we set her a little style challenge...
How did you get your job at Red?
I started at Red as a one-week intern in 2010 after completing a textiles degree, and it’s turned into the longest week of my life! As Style Editor I am responsible for styling our fashion stories and all our celebrity shoots, creating concepts, mood boards, and meeting with PRs to find out about the latest trends and projects.
How would you sum up your personal style?
I always look to the cool kids of the 1960s: Jane, Francoise, Audrey, et al, because their style was so effortless, and it’s remained completely iconic. So I take something from that, and add a bit of rock and roll, or something more modern to make it feel relevant.
Who are your style heroes?
Anyone who is confident in what they wear, because it means they are enjoying their clothes and not taking themselves too seriously. You can see it a mile off.
Tell us about the essential pieces in your fashion editor's wardrobe…
Cropped trousers - I can’t bear to think about my wardrobe without them! I’m also really into beige at the moment. I’ve always worn lots of black or white, so this is my new colour.
And what about your beauty secrets?
Getting my eyelashes tinted is my new favourite thing. There’s no need to worry about smudgy mascara or panda eye. Hurrah! But I have to take black liquid eye liner and red lipstick wherever I go. Just in case…
Your dream wardrobe acquisition is…
Probably a Celine bag (although I try not to wear too much leather, so I’d have to choose a fabric one).
What would you never, ever wear?
Your top three styling tips, please.
1. Belts are a wonderful thing. They can really finish off an outfit. Round a coat, round a shirt, just simply on jeans…
2. Sleeves look better pushed up.
3. When in doubt wear all black. It really helps if you’re getting flustered about what to wear. (Just add a red lip).
What trends will you be trying for AW16?
The night for day trend. I love this trend – it’s all about picking the special pieces in your wardrobe – like a fantastic dress, or sparkly top – and styling them down with trainers and knitwear.
Your current favourite...
I’m reading the Elena Ferrante Neapolitan series at the moment. I just love the way she describes her character’s lives in such detail.
I’ve just discovered Christine and the Queens, I love her dancing!
BFI player - it’s amazing. For £5 per month there are so many brilliant classic, quirky, independent films.
